One of the greatest joys of visiting Greece is the food. While Kardamena has plenty of restaurants catering to international tastes, the real magic happens when you sit down at an authentic Greek taverna.
To help you avoid the tourist traps, here is a guide on what to look for and how to eat like a local during your stay at Pittas Studios.
The Seafood Experience by the Marina Kardamena is a fishing village at heart. For the best seafood, take a walk along the marina. The best tavernas are the ones where you can see the day's catch displayed on ice. Look for traditional dishes like grilled octopus, crispy fried calamari, and fresh sea bream (tsipoura) cooked whole over charcoal with a simple dressing of olive oil and lemon.
Traditional Meze ( thin of it as Greek Tapas) To truly eat like a Greek, do not order just one main course. Instead, order several small plates (meze) to share with the middle of the table. Look for tavernas tucked away in the side streets off the main square. Must-try dishes include:
Tzatziki & Tirokafteri: Creamy garlic yogurt and spicy feta dips with fresh pita bread.
Dolmadakia: Vine leaves stuffed with rice and herbs.
Saganaki: Pan-fried, bubbling cheese finished with a squeeze of fresh lemon.
The Classic Souvlaki & Gyros For a quick, delicious, and incredibly affordable meal, you cannot beat a traditional Greek pita gyros. Perfect for grabbing after a long day at the beach, look for the busy grill houses where the meat is sliced fresh from the spit, wrapped in a warm pita with tomatoes, onions, fries, and tzatziki.
